red wine and hearing lossRed wine has a number of health claims including heart disease and dementia. Now an American study has indicated that it may now help prevent hearing loss. It is believed that the compound Resveratrol, found in red grapes, dark chocolate and blueberries reduced the prevalence in hearing loss in rats after being exposed to loud noise for significant periods of time. According to Dr Seidman “Resveratrol is a very powerful chemical that seems to protect against the body’s inflammatory process, as it relates to ageing, cognition and hearing loss”.

Dr Seidman continues “I am not convinced that it is just the Resveratrol. I think the tannins and the alcohol also have some benefits”, indicating that Red Wine has potentially greater effect than just eating red grapes. There is much excitement and anticipation regarding such a drug, and potential beneficiaries¬†for such a drug include military personnel and musicians, however human trials are a long way off at present.

So it would appear that the odd glass of wine may offer significant health benefits, but it is essential to ensure that you do not exceed your recommended daily allowance.
